BUILD Grants to Provide $1.5 Billion in Infrastructure Funding

Road CrewEarlier this week, U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation will award $1.5 billion in grant funding for 91 infrastructure projects in 49 states and the District of Columbia. The grant funding is being provided through the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) program, which was formerly known as Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER).

This year, the BUILD grants will provide three times more funding than they did in 2017.

It’s worth noting, however, that the national demand for BUILD grants continues to exceed the program’s available funds by a wide margin. In 2018, applicants requested more than $10 billion in funding.

“BUILD transportation grants are a major investment in road, rail, transit and port projects that serve as a down payment on this administration’s commitment to America’s Infrastructure,” said Secretary Chao in her announcement.

Louisiana, which will receive $25 million for a roadway widening and rehabilitation project on Interstate 12, is among the biggest winner’s in this year’s round of BUILD funding. Texas, meanwhile, will receive two grants at the maximum amount of $25 million for roadway improvement projects as well.
