How Exactly Are Used Crane Mats Graded?

Crane MatsCrane mats are useful, and often essential, for a variety of jobs. Renting crane mats is one option to save money, but buying used mats is another great way to save money while also building up your own inventory of mats.

Ritter Forest Products offers our customers a selection of quality, used crane mats that have been tested for performance. Mats are available in several grades to help contractors know what they are buying, but you may be wondering how exactly used crane mats are graded.

Grading standards are set by the National Hardwood Lumber Association and mats are graded by a licensed grader. Mats may be graded as either A, B or C, with the letters corresponding to the condition of the mat.

Grade A is the highest rating for used timber mats. Mats that are listed as being Grade A are in excellent condition with all bolts intact.

Grade B is the middle rating for used mats. These mats are a bit more worn than Grade A mats, but are still solid and in good, workable condition. Grade B timber mats may have a few broken or missing bolts, and may show stains and other signs of previous use.

Grade C timber mats are still serviceable, as well, but are more worn than mats of a higher grade. Mats that are classified as Grade C may have more damaged bolts or may have been partially repaired or rebuilt. This grade of mat will likely not last as long as a mat in better condition, but may still be an appropriate choice for some projects.

This grading system provides a quick and convenient way for contractors to know what to expect when looking at used crane mats. Which grade is best depends largely on your budget and your needs, but no matter which grade you choose, buying used timber mats can be a great way to save money while building up a supply of mats of your own – great if you have multiple projects planned or jobs in the same area.
